If the central stars of planetary nebulae are the immediate predecessors of white dwarfs, what are the immedia?

If the central stars of planetary nebulae are the immediate predecessors of white dwarfs, what are the immediate predecessors of planetary nebulae?|||The phrasing is a little akward since central stars are the predecessors of both.

"Normal" stars, like the Sun, will eventually puff off their outer envelopes and produce planetary nebulae. Later, when fusion ends, a white dwarf is the result.
